Happy New Year! We had a great start of of the 3rd quarter. In Math, we continued learning about area and perimeter. We will work on area and perimeter with word problems next week and finish up on Friday with an assessment. Next up will be Fractions.
In writer’s workshop we got back to basics by reviewing the structure and organizing of a 5 paragraph essay. Our first topic was winter. We brainstormed and came up with over 50 words to describe winter. The students have done a great job starting their stories and I’ve enjoyed reading them.
In Reading we started our unit on Mysteries. The students enjoyed hearing the stories, reading the clues and figuring out the mystery in The Blackbird Mystery for The Get a Clue series of books.
Since Science is my favorite I was thrilled to start our unit on Objects in the sky. Over the next month we will explore the sun, shadows, planets, moons, stars, the entire solar system and how we fit in it. We put together part of our Solar System flip book and did lots of research on our planet. I look forward to our field trip to the Planetarium on the 24th and the presentations and projects of each planet project due on January 27th.
I set up a classroom account on Seesaw. Seesaw is a student-driven digital portfolio that empowers students of any age to independently document what they are learning at school. So far the students have created an original poem about themselves and had a partner video them. You can download the app on your phone. It is also very secure. Only you can see what is in your their portfolio unless I have tagged it as a classroom assignment. It is easy to set up. If you haven’t done it yet you can go here https://app.seesaw.me/s/841-715-714 to get started.
Have a great weekend!
